Event Information
This is a free educational and inspirational event hosted by ComForCare Home Care and Brookdale Senior Living!

We invite family caregivers, professionals, students, etc. that would like to learn more about the incredibly powerful connection between Music and Memory. The event will include the touching documentary “Alive Inside – A Story of Music and Memory” followed by a panel of experts for questions/answers, all set in a fun atmosphere that promotes the vast benefits of music in all of our lives!

A complimentary ‘Brain Healthy’ lunch will be provided by Brookdale’s Signature Dining Staff. Djembe drummer, Eugene Taylor will be performing during the lunch hour highlighting how he utilizes music in local hospitals and senior living communities to connect people, memories and emotions.

The event has been approved by the North Carolina Health and Human Services Division of Health Service Regulations for (2) Continuing Education Unit Credit Hours.

Musicians

Eugene Taylor – Drummer

Eugene Taylor is a creative artist who has touched the lives and hearts of all his listeners. His soulful vocals and inspiring drumming has been described as uplifting and therapeutic. He was born in Memphis, Tennessee, and began his music career with a band called “The Drums.” He currently offers his amazing talent to those seeking something different and unique for their next special event.
Eugene has performed at various venues, including the N.C. Museum of History in Raleigh, N.C., the Regency Center in Cary, N.C., and the Hayti Heritage Culture Center in Durham, N.C. He has also provided music therapy to cancer survivors, and has been an invited performer for events sponsored by Rex Hospital in Raleigh, N.C. and the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
Eugene’s business, Djembetalk, provides music therapy and music and movement services to daycares, schools, hospices, nursing homes, and retirement centers. Eugene is also available for work retreats, drumming circles, birthday parties, receptions, weddings, book signing, art exhibits, or any special occasion.

Dr. Marilyn Wienand – Harpist

Dr. Marilyn Wienand has been a musician all her life. She has studied in Vienna, Austria, and holds degrees in organ and voice, with a Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Colorado in Boulder. She was a college professor in voice and class piano for many years. She has been an organist and Choirmaster of several churches. She began playing the harp in 1990 and now makes that the major focus of her life. She owns a beautiful Salvi Aurora pedal harp, a Salvi Egan lever harp and also a 22 string lap harp which her husband built for her.
Marilyn performs widely in North Carolina with church orchestras, for weddings, receptions, parties and other events. Playing the harp professionally is a great joy to her and is a major part of her life. She especially enjoys adding elegance and sacred space through harp.
Marilyn has always been interested in healing, and the harp was a natural for her to use in her healing work with people who are ill or dying. She volunteered at the Hospice unit of a large hospital in Charlotte, and for her local Hospice group, and often played in people’s homes. People received a real blessing from her music. Much of the therapeutic music Marilyn played was written by her husband Karl. In fact he wrote this beautiful harp music because Marilyn desired to have more things to play in the therapeutic situation. She has not been playing therapeutic harp in recent years because after Karl passed away in 1999 she felt too sad to do this work. Instead, she is focusing her healing work on an alternative therapy called BodyTalk.

Reverend Henry Edmonds

Reverend Edmonds is an ordained minister and human rights activist who’s public and private lives combine to make him a creative artist, educator, and church leader.
With a vast and varied background in public service, he has brought his experience to bear on the issues of Alzheimer’s disease. He seeks to create health/faith partnerships targeting health disparities and to insure the participation and retention of African Americans in Alzheimer’s disease studies at Duke University Medical Center.

Martine Bullard

Board Certified Music Therapist
Martine Bullard, MT-BC is the founder and owner of Mind & Body Music Therapy, LLC. Martine graduated from East Carolina University in 1998 and obtained national board certification in 2000. With over 15 years of experience as a music therapist working with older adults, she specializes in providing services for those with Alzheimer’s disease and other related dementias.

Currently, Martine is the president of the Music Therapy Association of North Carolina, and is an active member of the NC Music Therapy Task Force. A North Carolina native, Martine lives in Fuquay-Varina with her husband and two children. She currently provides Music Therapy services to 12 senior living communities and rehabilitation facilities as well as one on one services for individuals in the Triangle area.

Molly Boone – Brookdale Senior Living

Divisional Dementia Care Specialist – Southeast
Molly Boone graduated from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration and Gerontology. Her professional career began as a programmer working in an assisted living and memory care community in Atlanta, Georgia. After 3 years as an Activity and Memory Program Coordinator she moved into the role of a Memory Care Program Director with Emeritus Senior Living.
During her time with Emeritus she acted as a mentor for newly hired Program Directors as well as providing ongoing support and training. Molly has worked closely with the Georgia Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association to assist with fundraising efforts and the Walk to End Alzheimer’s. In 2011, she received the Georgia Assisted Living Federation of America (ALFA) Hero Award for Excellence.

Peggy Best – Licensed Clinical Social Worker

Alzheimer’s Association Eastern North Carolina Chapter
Associate Director – Programs & Outreach

Peggy Best joined the Alzheimer’s Association Eastern North Carolina Chapter in April 2014 as the Associate Director of Programs and Outreach. Peggy is a licensed clinical social worker and is responsible for the development, coordination and delivery of educational programs and support groups in the 51 counties of Eastern NC. She provides care consultations for persons with dementia, their families and caregivers.
After graduate school, Peggy worked as the social worker for an Alzheimer’s Special Care Unit providing care coordination for persons with dementia, their families and staff. She worked as a team lead manager in the 24/7 Contact Center of the national Alzheimer’s Association office in Chicago.
Peggy supports local and federal Alzheimer’s Association advocacy efforts at the legislative offices in Raleigh and in Washington DC.
